IV/IP Chemo Logistics

After months of waiting I was finally healthy enough to begin the chemotherapy regimen that my doctor recommended.  This regimen is known as IV/IP (intravenous/intraperitoneal).  The chemo drugs are delivered two ways, one through my veins in my IV port and one directly into my belly (aka - peritoneal cavity) through my IP port.  This regimen is on a 21 day cycle, and every 21 days the cycle is supposed to start over for four total rounds of treatment.

On the first and second day of the cycle I am admitted to the hospital and stay over night to receive my medications.  To the best of my understanding, the only reason I am admitted to the hospital is because I receive a 24 hour continuous IV treatment of chemo called Taxol (which I received a lower dose of during "chemo lite").  An outpatient center would not be able to accommodate this treatment for the simple fact that it takes so long.  Once the IV treatment is over they switch to the IP treatment.  They load me up with fluids then one liter of a type of chemotherapy called Cistplatin basically gets poured into my belly.  After the chemo, a liter of fluids goes into my belly as well.  Once all two liters are in I have to begin rotating.  Every 15 minutes I turn on either side, tilted up on my head, or tilted down towards my feet, for two hours.  They want to be sure the chemo is able to coat all the areas inside my abdomen.

The schedule of this chemotherapy regimen calls for another IP treatment on day 8 of the cycle.  Day 8 is outpatient and is switched to the chemotherapy drug Taxol.  Just like the inpatient treatment, I receive chemo, fluids, and rotate.  The remaining 13 days of the cycle are designed to give your body time to recover from the drugs before the cycle starts over.

Unfortunately, I was unable to stay on this schedule for my first round.  I'll update on how round one went for me in another post.  It seemed like a bit too much to explain all together.  But, round one will end up taking me 35 day instead of 21 and resulted in an unexpected hospital stay.
