Happy Thanksgiving from University of Louisville Hospital

It is dinner time and we would normally be anxiously anticipating my Aunt Brenda's feast that could feed the entire block of her neighborhood.  Her, my mother, and my aunt Beverly would be running around the kitchen laughing and carrying on.  Stephanie would be chit-chatting with someone in my family who is considering a home purchase, sale, or renovation. I remember the days when my grandfather, Cecil, would be cutting jokes and messing with all of the grand kids all before he said a heartfelt pre-feast prayer.  It is times like today I really miss him and wish he was here now to crack some jokes and help us always to stay on the bright side of things.

Unfortunately, this is the first Thanksgiving in many years that I will not be participating in the Underwood family gathering.  Yesterday we had two big events happen that set us back a bit. One landed Stephanie in the hospital and the other landed my mom on the couch and fighting nausea and pain.

I had to take my mother to the ER at 5:30 AM to find out what was causing her severe abdomen pain. After a long and uncomfortable morning in the ER, I brought her back home and sat her up on the couch for some much needed rest. Just when I thought I was headed to work, Steph pulled me aside and informed me that she too was not feeling well.  Steph's pelvic drain was not adequately voiding urine, her stomach was distended, and she was nauseous. The two most important people in my life went down in a matter of hours.  Tough day.

After calling her urologists office all day, we were finally admitted into University Hospital by her Gynecologic Oncologist (more explanation needed but I will save it for a later post). We have been in the hospital since late yesterday afternoon and Stephanie seems to be fighting an infection.  She is also scheduled for a procedure that could yield another drain.  Yes - another tube...  That procedure should happen tomorrow morning but we may not find out until tomorrow because the staff is a bit light this afternoon.

With all of the happenings of the last few months, we are still very thankful.  Today we are especially thankful for the people in our life and for all of the support that has been given generously to Stephanie and I over the last 3 months.  A few of those people  visited us for a mini Thanksgiving feast that was as special as any I have had.  We took a family picture and it is one that I will remember forever.  Julie, Chet, Monica, Trevor, Andrew, Jackson, and Maximus thank you for a great Thanksgiving celebration

Happy Thanksgiving.  I hope you enjoy the time with the ones you love.
